The track features the resonant tolling of the Divine Bell of King Seongdeok, an artifact cast in 771 AD and officially designated as South Korea’s National Treasure No. 29.

The audio recording in the album is courtesy of the Gyeongju National Museum.

It’s known for its mysterious sound. It doesn’t just ring; it has a “beat” that vibrates and fades over a long period.

The bell historically signaled the time to return home or find peace.

RM mentioned in BTS’ livestream STUDIO NOTES ‘ARIRANG’ that the track is 1:37 long because that is the length of time needed for the wavelengths to die out completely after the bell has been struck.

On all the tracks before “No. 29” BTS sings about the kind of ambitions and attitude they show onstage.

The first half of “ARIRANG” until “No. 29” unfolds like a concert—BTS taking the stage, calling out to the crowd, showing the world who they are, and becoming one with their audience.

Where the first half of the album tells us who the BTS members are as artists, the second half, turns inward for a microscopic focus on their inner lives.
